It’s twelve in the morning on a festive January 1st. The ball just dropped and people around you are toasting to the momentous occasion. Booming fireworks light the sky as 2021 is ushered in with great delight. The thought of living another year during a pandemic gives you a sense of motivation to press on. This is your time to shine and you’re going to make it memorable.

We can all agree that 2020 was a tragic year for many. The loss of jobs, money and loved ones were some of the many mishaps people struggled to endure. Living in a seemingly changing environment was an impossible task, particularly for those who lacked the resources. While the obstacles overwhelmingly piled up, so did the solutions. For instance, there was a shortage in masks

at the initial phases of the pandemic. Everybody needed to cover up and stay safe to prevent the spread. In spite of that, resourceful people started making homemade masks for themselves and those who desperately needed it. Another example is the way businesses stay open. Adhering to social distancing guidelines through limited seating and glass panel separators is what keeps restaurants operating. The key point to take away from these two events is one word: change.

Change is one of the greatest fears reality throws at us. We dislike the idea of moving our existing routines to accommodate something last minute. It ruins the flow and serves as a HUGE inconvenience. The truth is change is also one of the greatest tools. Our ability to work under pressuring circumstances is what makes us stronger than we once were before. Just like those previous examples, creativity fills our minds and forces us to think outside the box. Through that we can prepare for the worse or even prevent it. It’s never an easy task, but actions are all it ever takes. Forget about the “new year, new me” slogan. How about new year, BETTER me?

What are some of the things you hope to improve on this year?
